The following article appeared in the October, 2024 edition of JLife Heart of New Jersey. It was written by our congregant and MRT’s Membership Committee Chair Gena Ansell-Lande!

There are many reasons to love Reform Judaism and being a part of a reform synagogue, not the least of which is their willingness to adapt to the modern world and move in ways that welcome new members, no matter their background.
For those in an interfaith relationship, finding the right place of worship can make life a lot easier.
Reform Judaism has long embraced diversity while still preserving time-honored traditions of the religion. I have personally seen the way clergy at my own reform synagogue focus on each member while still providing space for personal introspection. Known for delivering a creative and modern approach to worship, Reform Judaism has a way of meeting people right where they are in their lives.

The celebration of Hannukah celebrates the ancient victory of the Jewish people over their enemies and the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem which they sought to destroy. The Hannukah menorah candles are lit for eight nights to symbolize the miracle of lights that would not diminish over that same period despite the temple’s destruction.
This year the Monmouth Reform Temple (MRT) Community came together to create an environmental Hannukah Menorah to celebrate the renewal and protection of our environment in coordination with the Jewish climate action group Dayenu.

The Monmouth Reform Temple (MRT) community in Tinton Falls heartily welcomes its new rabbi, Renee Goldberg Edelman. She will assume her leadership of the temple on July 1.
Jay Feigus, who chaired the rabbi search committee states, “Rabbi Edelman will be a great fit for MRT. Her compassion, spirituality and love of Judaism shines through in everything that she does!!”
Rabbi Edelman comes to MRT from Temple Sha’arey Shalom, in Springfield, where she served as the congregation’s spiritual leader since 2014. A native of the greater Boston area, she graduated from Brandeis University where she studied Journalism and initially pursued a career in that field until she fulfilled her childhood Rabbi’s prediction (when she was only seven years old) that she would become a rabbi.

The Monmouth Reform Temple (MRT) Mitzvah Day committee had been meeting for months fine-tuning the various activities that bring their temple members together to make a difference in the greater community one day in April. While Mitzvah Day was scheduled to take place on April 26, early on in the month it became apparent that members weren’t going to gather to sweep beaches, clean trails or cook at the Asbury Park Center. The temple, as the rest of our world, was closed for Covid 19.
Refusing to be deterred or derailed by this virus, MRT President Marjorie Wold suggested that the temple go virtual with what could be done. The result: MRT members created or donated over 500 masks to food banks, support organizations and individuals who needed them! This was just one the many activities and donation opportunities offered during their first Virtual Mitzvah Day held the last week of April.
