Judaism teaches that even in death, the spirits of people we love continue to thrive in our hearts and souls. People touch our lives in ways we can never quantify. Some held our hands. Some devoted their lives to prepare us to live in this world on our own. We are blessed with memories and good work that continues to teach and motivate us each day. For this reason, we commit to honoring those who bless our lives throughout the year.
Traditionally, we light a memorial candle and individually remember loved ones each year on his/her yahrzeit (death anniversary). In our Temple family, we observe four memorial services each year to reflect on the debt of gratitude that we owe those who have come before us. On Yom Kippur and during Sukkot, Pesach, and Shavuot we take time to reflect and remember people whose hands we can no longer hold. We observe this “Yizkor (memorial)” service four times a year, celebrating the memories.
Every year, Monmouth Reform Temple publishes a memorial tribute book to remember people our members hold dear. The book includes family and congregational names and readings of consolation. We distribute them for each of the four Yizkor services throughout the year.
This year, our book will be published both in written form and electronically. The printed version will be available on Yom Kippur and the electronic version will be emailed to everyone prior to Yom Kippur.
