Shabbat Kallah
February 29, 2020 @ 10:30 am - 3:30 pm
Please join the Adult Education committee of
Monmouth Reform Temple
for Shabbat Kallah as we welcome Rabbi David Ellenson
Friday and Saturday, February 28-29, 2020
Rabbi Ellenson’s contributions to Reform Judaism are extensive. He is Chancellor-Emeritus of Hebrew
Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, where he served as president from 2001-2013 and again as
interim president during 2018-2019 following the tragic death of Rabbi Aaron Panken. He is also former
director of the Schusterman Center for Israel Studies and Professor Emeritus of Near Eastern and Judaic
Studies at Brandeis University. A scholar of modern Jewish thought and history, his teaching at
Monmouth Reform Temple will be based on his forthcoming Brandeis University Press book,
AMERICAN JEWISH THOUGHT SINCE 1934, co-edited with Rabbi Michael Marmur.
Rabbi Ellenson will be introduced to the congregation during our Friday 7pm Shabbat service.
Saturday 10:30am-12pm: Rabbi Ellenson will focus on “Sources of Jewish Spirituality Then
and Now: Parashat Terumah and American Jewish Writings on Spirituality Today,” addressing
the week’s Torah portion and other sources.
12noon: break for lunch
Saturday 1:15pm-2:45pm: Rabbi Ellenson will address the subject “Peoplehood”, as we
consider what it means to be a Jewish people. What do we have in common, as Jews, across the
world? Where might the future of Judaism lie?
2:45pm: break for coffee
Saturday 3:00pm-4:30pm: Rabbi Ellenson’s topic will be “Jews, Israel, and Power: Conflicting
American Jewish Positions.” This session will explore differing opinions regarding Zionism, as
well as the historical concept of a Jewish state.
The Shabbat Kallah program is made possible by a generous bequest of MRT Past President
Robert Rosin.
A contribution of $15 is requested from attendees who are not members of MRT. We are
pleased that you are attending and would like to continue to offer enriching programs.
Contributions from MRT members are appreciated, to help us continue to provide engaging
Adult Education programs.
10am Saturday coffee and bagels, then afternoon lunch, are included for all.
